Here are three things you should do to troubleshoot an air conditioner that will not turn on as the summer months approach.
1. Take a quick look at your thermostat.
Many homeowners fail to realize that the problems they experience with their air conditioner units can actually originate with the thermostat controlling these units. If your air conditioner will not kick on, take a quick look at your thermostat.
Ensure that you have your system set to "cool" and that the temperature setting is below the room temperature in your home. Changing the settings on your thermostat can often get your air conditioner to begin cooling your home, so taking a look at the thermostat when your air conditioner malfunctions is a great place to start the troubleshooting process.
2. Check your circuit breakers.
Your air conditioner needs access to a constant stream of electrical power in order to run properly. If your air conditioner isn't turning on, then a lack of electricity could be the culprit.

3. Inspect the air conditioning unit.

Check to ensure that the external safety switch is in the "on" position, and check for any water in your air conditioner's condensate overflow tray.
If your air conditioner is equipped with a sensor switch that automatically turns the unit off when water collects in the overflow tray, emptying out this water could restore function to your air conditioner.
