When it comes to AC maintenance, there is not just one component that needs to be cleaned. That is, there are several small components that all need to be properly cleaned and maintained on a regular basis to keep your system as efficient as possible. If one small component is not properly cleaned, it could affect the functionality of another one. It can then have a domino effect, causing your entire system to become less efficient. For instance, if your condenser coils are not clean, your heat pump will not be efficient, and your air temperatures might not be accurate. Ultimately, this can all lead to a system which uses more electricity to produce less cold air, meaning you're paying more for less.
Clean the Condenser Coils
When it comes to prepping your AC system for the summer, you want to uncover your heat pump and clean the condenser coils. The heat pump is the large appliance on the outside of your home, which you might just refer to as your air conditioner. Even though it is called a heat pump, it is responsible for making the inside of your home colder, not hotter. In fact, the heat pump draws warm air out of your home and circulates cold air into it.
This is obviously a oversimplification of the process, but all you need to know is that the condenser coil on the outside of your heat pump need to be kept as clean as possible. So, you want to cover your heat pump during the winter. This way the coils don't get as dirty. But, you'll probably still need to clean the coils by simply washing them out with water. You can spray them down with a strong stream from your house. You don't need to scrub your coils with anything. Try to just use water, so you don't damage or bend the coils.
