Many people use furnaces to heat their homes, but the furnaces have key differences that affect their operations and efficiencies. Below are some of the differences. 

Energy Source

Furnaces have different energy sources. For example, many furnaces burn fossil fuels like natural gas, oil, and propane. These furnaces have burners that burn air-fuel mixtures, producing heat that keeps you warm and combustion gases that exit the house.

HVAC manufacturers also produce electric furnaces, which use electricity to heat high-resistance coils. The coils then heat the air that circulates and warms your house. The energy type determines the furnace's efficiency, installation cost, and maintenance requirements. For example, fossil-fuel furnaces have combustion burners that electric furnaces lack.

Blower Stages

Furnaces have blowers that direct hot air into the ducts for further circulation throughout the house. Furnaces differ in their blower types, with the main ones being:

  • Single-stage blowers that operate either off or operating at full speed
  • Two-stage blowers that can operate at low and high speeds
  • Variable blowers that operate at different levels, depending on the heating need

The blower operation affects heating and energy efficiency. For example, variable blowers are more efficient than other blowers. The variable blowers match their speed to the heating demand, so they don't waste energy.

Burner Type

As explained above, furnaces that use fuel have burners where the fuel mixes with air and burns. These burners come in different types, including:

  • Inshot burners with draft inducers that mix air and fuel and force the mixture into the burner
  • Conversion burners convert the fuel into a different type before it flows into the burner; for example, a conversion burner may turn liquid fuel into gas for a furnace that burns gaseous fuel

Some burners are relatively more efficient than others. For example, inshot burners deliver precise air-fuel mixtures that burn more efficiently than upshot burners. The latter is more prevalent in older furnaces.

Ignition System

A furnace's ignition system delivers the heat that triggers the combustion process. Furnaces also differ in their ignition systems. The electronic ignition system uses electricity to produce an electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture. The standing pilot light burns a little fuel to produce the flame that ignites the main burners.

Again, the ignition system affects the burner's efficiency. For example, electronic igniters are more efficient than pilot lights because the latter stay lit all the time. Electronic igniters only produce sparks upon demand.
